Mexical Medical announces second-generation Smart Prosthetic Leg with adaptive gait firmware
Mexical Medical today announced the Series 7 Smart Prosthetic Leg, a next-generation lower-limb prosthetic featuring adaptive gait firmware co-developed by the Calexico research laboratory and the Mexicali manufacturing site. The device builds on five years of clinical research conducted in partnership with hospitals across the United States and Canada.
A platform built on patient feedback
The Series 7 platform began with a question raised in clinical sessions with patients like Michael Clark, a US Army veteran who has worn Mexical prosthetics since 2021: how can the device learn from the patient, rather than the patient adapting to the device? Working alongside Sofia Reyes, our Head of Research & Development, and Dr. Kenji Tanaka, our Chief Technology Officer, the team designed an embedded machine-learning model that continuously retrains on the patient's actual gait.
"The Series 7 is the first leg that gets better the longer you wear it," said Dr. Rios. "Within two weeks of fitting, patients are seeing the firmware adapt to how they actually move — how they sit down, how they take stairs, how they recover from a stumble. That is the future of prosthetics."
Clinical results
In a multi-site clinical study coordinated by Maria Flores, Mexical's Clinical Trial Coordinator, sixty-two patients fitted with Series 7 devices completed a twelve-week home-use evaluation. Reported outcomes included improved confidence on uneven terrain, reduced fatigue during sustained walking, and faster recovery from missteps. The full study results will be published in collaboration with the Calexico research group and the partnering hospitals later this year.
Manufacturing and availability
Series 7 devices are assembled at the Mexicali factory under the supervision of Plant Manager Javier Morales and Quality Control Inspector Ana Castillo, with final clinical-grade calibration performed at the Calexico site. The device is available now in the United States through public and private hospital partners, with rollout to Canadian partners coordinated by Sales Director Emily White and Sales Representative Jean-Luc Dubois.
European availability is expected to follow CE marking review, supported by external counsel Hans Zimmerman of our EU legal team. Japanese market entry is being led by Market Development Manager Yuki Sato.
